Why is orthodontic treatment important?
While a more attractive smile and improved self-confidence are benefits most patients enjoy from an orthodontic treatment, it's actually important for dental health too! When your teeth are properly aligned, you significantly reduce your risk for tooth decay and gum disease. With orthodontic treatment, the teeth are placed in proper positions in order for you to have a healthy bite.
At what age should you get braces?
The American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that a patients first exam be done at 7 years old. In young children, we can look for any early problems with jaw growth and emerging, permanent teeth. That way, it's possible we can start treatment early to prevent more serious complications later on.
Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
You can never be too old to receive orthodontic treatment; in fact, 25% of orthodontic patients are adults!
How long do you have to wear braces?
How long patients have to wear braces varies from case to case. It mostly depends on how far your teeth and jaw will need to move to achieve the desired smile. Most cases are completed in 18-24 months
Do braces hurt?
Most patients typically experience some discomfort during the first week after they have received braces, and after any time the braces are adjusted. This is due to the fact that the braces will apply a gentle force to your teeth to help them shift into place over time. Pain Relievers, such as Tylenol, will help reduce your discomfort.
What is the difference between Invisalign and clear braces?
Invisalign is essentially a series of clear aligners that are worn over your teeth. Each new set in the series is customized to comfortably fit over your teeth as they shift over time. They are also removable, which allows you to continue eating and brushing as usual when they're not in use. Clear braces, on the other hand, are made just like traditional metal braces but have a more transparent appearance. This is because the material they are made from usually have a clear or tooth-colored appearance, allowing them to blend in easily with your teeth. Unlike Invisalign, they are not removable, so require slight adjustments in how you brush and floss your teeth as well as what you can eat.
